Alanis Morissette

“You Oughta Know”

(Live/Letterman ‘95)

This song is not only one of the definite tracks of the mid 90’s, and of the entire decade, not only in the U.S but worldwide; but it’s also, to mind at least, one of the best rock songs of all time.

It’s all too understandable that the instrumental track itself can be seamlessly overlooked when you’re instantly seduced and hypnotized by the vocals, the lyrics, and the passion of what Alanis Morissette was expressing.

While they’re not featured in this live cut above, the supergroup of musicians who supplied the set and setting included Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters) who was her drummer at the time, Dave Navorro (Jane’s Addiction) on guitar – along with his bandmate at the time, during the One Hot Minute era of RCHP, Flea on bass. The next time you listen to the album cut (the standard version preferably but the Jimmy the Saint blend is fine as well), do it with headphones on and listen to the bass.
