Radiohead – “Airbag”
Tibetan Freedom Concert 1998
There’s nothing about this song that I don’t love, and for me this live version un particular truly captures a special a moment in time during their career, and as well during my childhood and coming of age. Airbag was the intro track to OK Computer, and it seems to define the intersection of their sound – it was ambient and experimental but also fierce and visceral. They were and are very much capable of melting faces. One of the many things I love here is the way that Colin Greenwood approaches the bass, in this song and in just in general. He effectively never plays the same bassline from one verse or segment to the next. And because he bridges the gap between the other players in such a way, it’s easy to miss out on or overlook – particularly when listening without headphones.
